Council Tax rebate scam

TAXPAYERS in St Edmundsbury are being warned to be aware of a rebate scam.

A spokeswoman for the council said that its revenues and benefits service had been contacted by at least three customers in the Bury St Edmunds area, who said they had been contacted by a company telling them that they may be entitled to a large Council Tax refund, and then ask for the bank details of the customer in order to send them the money.

“The council never asks for bank account details over the telephone,” said a council spokeswoman. Anyone who receives a call like this is being told not to give their details to the company and to report the matter to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
