Mid Suffolk District Council has bought two sites in Stowmarket to develop for housing.

The authority has purchased the site of the former Stowmarket Middle School, in Walnut Tree Walk, and a former community education centre, in Childer Road. The sites are next to each other.

The council has also bought a former care home in Eye for housing.

It aims for work to start on the sites next summer.

It follows the purchase of Needham Market Middle School last year.

Cllr Nick Gowrley, leader of Mid Suffolk District Council and portfolio holder for assets and investment, said he was ‘extremely pleased’ the authority had been successful in buying the sites from Suffolk County Council.

“We now have prime residential locations in our three market towns across the district and this is significant because it means we can begin work to turn these redundant sites into places to live,” he said.
