Council asks for views on Abbey Gardens bid

PLANS for the future of the Abbey Gardens, in Bury St Edmunds, are currently on display to the public at The Apex.

The plans, which form part of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid, can be viewed in the café until 5pm on Saturday.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council wants to carry out major restoration work, develop the cafe, the water garden, the bowling green and the aviary.

Graham Maynard, a gardener and guide at the Abbey Gardens who has been explaining the plans to the public, said there had been much postive feedback about the proposals.

He said: “We have had a lot of people come here to view the plans and we have received a lot of feedback and constructive criticism.

“A lot of people come along with a negative view of what we are trying to do but when we explain some of the reasons why we are developing the gardens they leave quite happy.

“It is very important to get the views of people in Bury – it is very much a community bid.”
