A GROUP of generous teenagers have raised £600 to take elderly people on a day trip to the zoo.

The Stowupland High School students, aged 14 and 15, raised the money as part of the Interact Club project, which aims to encourage young people to get involved with their community.

The project, which is overseen by Stowmarket Rotary Club, is aimed at 12 to 18-year-olds. Teenagers organised sponsored walks and car washes to raise the money for the outing.

The youngsters then took elderly residents from Hurstlea Court, in Needham Market, to Banham Zoo for the day on Tuesday, and provided them with a picnic lunch.

Philip Jeffries, youth officer from Stowmarket Rotary Club, said: “It’s youngsters in action, these are young people actually doing things for the community.

“They are a credit to everyone and the residents really enjoyed their day.”
