Colleges join forces through Suffolk Academies Trust

West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds and One (formerly Suffolk One) in Ipswich joined forces on Tuesday with the formation of a new charitable trust.

The Suffolk Academies Trust is a visionary collaboration which aims to strengthen access to outstanding post-16 education in Suffolk.

Dr Nikos Savvas, WSC principal, said: “We are fully committed to the people of this region and our role in driving quality and providing first class education across the county.”

He added: “By joining forces, we are in a uniquely strong position to raise standards and enhance the learning opportunities across the region, from east to west of the county. It’s an exciting chapter, and I’m very much looking forward to it.”

Alan Whittaker, One principal, said his college’s recent ‘outstanding’ Ofsted report showed it was entering into the union from a position of strength.

He said: “We want to offer more opportunities and resources to our students and staff. This exciting new alliance will allow us to do this.”

“Overall though, it’s very much business as usual. Day to day workings of both educational establishments won’t change,” he added.
