Thetford’s British Trust for Ornithology has confirmed that its longest satellite tagged cuckoo Chris is dead.

He was one of the first tagged at Santon Downham in 2011 and his last transmission came from an unusual stop in the Saharan Tibesti mountains on the way to his winter home in the Congo.

Until the tagging project, nobody knew where cuckoos went in the winter, nor the routes they took to get there, which made it difficult to know what help they needed to try to halt their dwindling numbers.

Chris was named after Springwatch presenter Chris Packham, who is the BTO’s president.
