The winner of this year’s Bury Free Press Chip Shop of the Year is Aaron and Yvonne Lam’s Lake Avenue Fish Bar.
The news of the win has come to the couple just as Yvonne is returning to work in the shop in Lake Avenue, Bury St Edmunds.
Aaron, 45, said: “She had cancer last year but she has got the all clear so she is starting to come back part time at the moment.
“It was strange, I was having to work with someone different for the first time. It is good to have her back.”
The shop has been a chippy since the estate was built and the Lams have owned it for 25 years.
Readers voted it the best and Aaron thinks his success is down to his army of regular customers on the Mildenhall Road Estate.
He said: “I’m on a housing estate so I rely on my local customers, so they are repeat customers.
“You’ve got to do you best for them, charging a reasonable price and ensuring quality for them to keep coming back, otherwise I would have been gone a long time ago.
“It’s straight forward fish and chips – I don’t do pizzas or kebabs. You concentrate on one thing and do it well.”
