Bacton Under Fives celebrates 40 year anniversary

Two generations who have passed through a children’s group near Stowmarket returned for its fortieth anniversary party.

Bacton Under Fives started as a mother and toddler group in May 1979.

Current manager Pat Chapman, 63, was an original staff member and has seen the group develop to offer care for children up to 14-years-old, five days a week. She said: “It was a celebration of our fortieth year in existence.

“It was a sunny day, the weather certainly helped.”

The group is a committee-run charity, rather than being authority controlled. It started with 13 children, meeting two mornings a week and now has more than 100 families on its books. Mrs Chapman said children who have been in the group have had kids of their own, who are now attending. “I’m just as passionate about children and working with children,” she said. “A lot of our staff have been here many years. A lot of people have given a lot of time to get the group where it is today.”

She added: “The celebration was a family affair. There was a lovely atmosphere, there was a children’s entertainer and a barrel organ playing music.”
