Independents day celebrations will last a whole week in Bury St Edmunds this year.
Two years ago Bid4Bury held its first July 4 independents day, designed to support independent traders.
But this year, rather than restrict the activities to just one day – the first week of July has been declared Bury St Edmunds Independents Week.
It is part of a nationwide initiative that encourages shoppers to buy at least one item from a small local business.
Bid4Bury’s Business Support Officer Neil Boast, who is co-ordinating the week, said: “Within the town centre, more than 60% of the businesses are independently owned. “We already know the value they add to this town, but this is highlighted time and time again in surveys about the area where people tell us they put great importance on this independent feel.
”However, while we hope lots of people will make an effort to support these businesses during Independents Week, our independent businesses need support every week of the year to allow our town centre to thrive. “One of the best ways of finding out what our town has to offer is to visit the ourburystedmunds website or download the app.”
This year’s week long celebrations, supported by Ian Dalrymple and his team at Intersport in Whiting Street, will take place from July 1.
“Independent shops make Bury St Edmunds the town that it is and I welcome any initiative that highlights the value that they add to the ‘high street,’ Mr Dalrymple said.
“I’ve been lobbying the Government to do more to recognise this and encourage the diversity that Independents bring to town centres.”
Shops and businesses will be displaying special posters and many will also run offers and promotions throughout the week.
