A CARAVAN park owner in Stonham Aspal has submitted plans to Mid Suffolk District Council for the siting of 47 new static caravans.

Starglade Parks Ltd has also applied for continued use of the land at Stonham Barns, in Pettaugh Road, as a touring caravan site and has also submitted proposals to replace an existing toilet and shower building.

The plans for 47 extra static caravans – to be added to the nine which are already sited there – come following the rejection of a proposal in 2007 for timber holiday chalets on the same site.

Starglade Parks Ltd aims to retain 15 static caravans for holiday letting, selling the remaining 41 as holiday caravans on 20-year leases.

The site, which covers 1.7 hectares, has been run as a caravan park since 1998 and currently has planning permission for 60 touring caravan pitches, nine static caravans and one residential caravan for the site manager.

The proposals submitted to planners at Mid Suffolk District Council also include re-siting the site manager’s residential caravan.

No extension of the site is necessary to accommodate the extra static caravans.

A statement submitted alongside the plans said: “The holiday accommodation at Stonham Barns is ideally suited to take advantage of the increase in domestic holidays driven by recession, a poor sterling exchange rate and the trend for ‘greener’ holidays.

“The proposed development would enhance and consolidate an established facility on a recognised tourist route. It would support and enhance local facilities and the rural economy without significant adverse effects on landscape, wildlife, traffic, residential amenity or the countryside.”

The application has been validated and planners aim to reach a decision by May.
