A national volunteer group which rehomes ex-battery hens is holding a rehoming day in Fornham St Martin, near Bury, on September 27.

Fresh Start for Hens, which started in 2011 and has since rehomed over 27,000 ex-commercial chickens, is calling on people to register to rehome as many hens as they can for a donation of £2.50 per bird.

Taz Clarke, of Bury St Edmunds Fresh Start for Hens, said: “If we cannot rescue these hens they will be sent to slaughter at 72 weeks old, when they are quite frankly still babies.”

Ms Clarke held two successful rehomings at her Fornham St Martin home in June and July, sending over 150 hens to new owners.

“These hens could easily live for another three or fours years,” said Ms Clarke.

“We at Fresh Start for Hens are all animal lovers and volunteer a lot of time for free trying to recue as many hens as possible and get them into loving homes to enjoy their retirement.”

Hens must be reserved for the September rehoming day by September 15. Visit to sign up.
