With a loan from his dad and the bank Mark Rutterford bought his first van – eight years on his courier firm is to take on his tenth vehicle.
Thetford-based East (East Anglia Swift Transport) Ltd is now on course to achieve £500,000 turnover for the first time this year.
Founder Mark, 29, is also set to take on his 15th member of staff.
“I’m really chuffed but it has been a lot of hard work and long hours,” said Mark.
“Like many businesses we have been hit by rising fuel costs.
“But business is definitely growing. I keep plugging away. My main customer base is in Norfolk and Suffolk.
“I have a major customer in Ipswich, and another in Great Yarmouth who I deliver all over Europe for, mainly to Denmark and Holland.
“ I have also done deliveries to Italy, France and Belgium.
“As a result of that I just did my first job for a foreign customer picking up and bringing a delivery back from Holland.
“I’m now hoping to build up my contacts abroad and see how it goes from there.”
Mark had been working for a major courier company when he decided to leave and go it alone.
“I had no great vision, I just had a van and some contacts.
“It is hard when you are a new business but a few companies gave me a chance and I made sure I didn’t let them down,” said Mark.
The business operates a warehouse and two offices in Stephenson Way.
Mark is also a retained firefighter in the town.
EAST became a limited company in 2007 and celebrates its anniversary next month.
