Harvester parades in capital

Have your say

A GIANT sugar beet harvester took pride of place in last weekend’s Lord Mayor’s Show when it took the message about sugar beet harvesting to the capital.

The Agrifac Big Six 6 row harvester – owned by Peter Butler, a contract farmer from Yoxford – was liveried with information panels about Bury’s sugar beet factory, the National Farmers’ Union and the Worshipful Company of Farmers.

This was the first time the sugar beet industry has taken part in the parade and the first time a harvester had driven through the centre of London.

Paul Bee, British Sugar agriculture communications manager, who organsed the promotional material for the event, said: “Everybody has been delighted with the whole thing.”

Peter, who has been operating 6-row harvesters on a contract basis since 2000, drove the machine through London and said: “It was an unbeleivable experience to drive through London with all those people waving at you.”
