Concerns for street as brewery markets pub

BREWING giant Greene King is to sell a town centre pub in Bury St Edmunds.

The company is to market the St Edmunds Tavern, in Risbygate Street, which closed last week, on commercial grounds.

A spokesman said: “We reviewed the future of the St Edmunds Tavern following the departure of the licensee and have now closed the pub.

“We will shortly be marketing the pub for sale as is.

“It will not re-open under the ownership of Greene King.”

The move has prompted concerns over Risbygate Street, which has a number of empty shops.

Further along the road, in Out Risbygate, The Falcon pub is closed and boarded up after Greene King won a planning application to develop the site for housing.

Paul Hopfensperger, chairman of Risbygate Street Traders Association, is lobbying for the area to be promoted more widely and is aiming to see this year’s Christmas Fayre spreading into the street.

The St Edmunds Tavern was formerly the Rising Sun.
