A BURY St Edmunds barista is creating a champion coffee in a bid to be named Costa’s Barista of the Year 2011 in a world-wide competition.
Nico Grobler, who works at Costa Coffee in the arc, competed at the UK regional finals of the competition in Lambeth, London on Thursday.
The 33-year-old, orginally from South Africa, won the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire heats in August and believes he has what it takes to win.
He said: “I hope I can win because I have the skills, the experience and the enthusiasm for making coffee.”
The competiton requires baristas to craft a speciality drink, with Mr Grobler preparing a coffee called My Walk of Life. “It’s not just a cup of coffee, its about my life” he said.
“I’m using orange zest and orange blossom as I used to walk though orange fields in South Africa, as well as cinnamon, used by my mother in baking. I’m also using nutmeg, which is the flavour of the first coffee I had, then I top it off with an espresso with a caramelised ice cube.”
The winner of the regional finals will proceed to Costa’s Roastery in London for the Champion of Champions Finals in October.
