Business owners - get your customers to promote you on social media

One of the best ways to create a buzz about your business is to get your customers to do it for you. After all customers saying positive things about your business is more convincing than you blowing your own horn.

There are many ways in which you can encourage your loyal customers to do this but first the basics! You need to provide excellent service and products to your current customers so that when you do encourage them to promote your business they will be proud to do so.

The easiest way to do this is to just ask but if you feel your customers need encouragement here are a few ways to get this type of testimonial:

Have a Contest

Get your customers to make a video testimonial of why they love your business. Tell them that the person who gets the most votes on their video promotion will get something free from you that is designed only for your audience and current customers.

Give Referral Credit

Let your customers know that you want them to tell others about you by sending them encouragement to do so in the form of credits against the work you do for them.

Start an Affiliate Programme

You don’t have to open affiliate programs to everyone; they can be members’ only affiliate programs. If you have exclusive deals only for your customers to promote you, they will be more likely to do so.

Ask for Referrals via LinkedIn

Don’t send out the generic request offered by LinkedIn to get referrals. Instead, take the time to send a special request to each person that you want to refer you.

Ask for Testimonials for Your Website

Within the first 30 to 45 days of doing business with a new customer, send them a form to put a testimonial on your website. If you use WordPress, there are great testimonial plugins that you can use to make this process simple for you and the client.

Ask for Feedback

When you send an invoice, that’s a great time to ask for feedback from your client. Some accounting packages offer this as a service automatically when you send an invoice to any client. If they send good feedback, tell them you’re accepting new clients or about your customer only affiliate program.


If someone has been a customer for a period of time, talk about them on your blog about how good their business is. You can even ask them to write the blog post for you to explain why they enjoy being your customer, make it easy for them by sending them a questionnaire to help.

Social Media Sharing

Give customers the opportunity to share on social media what you’ve done for them or what you’ve bought. Amazon has a great system set up for this where, when you make a purchase, you’re given the opportunity to share your purchase with your friends. Eventbrite also has a very effective system as when you buy a ticket for an event, you’re asked if you want to let your friends know you’re going.

Getting customers to promote your products and services for you is good old-fashioned word-of-mouth marketing. It’s the best marketing money can and cannot buy. As the saying goes, ‘birds of a feather flock together’, so it’s more than likely that your customer knows other people who fit in with the demographics of your target audience. If your customer shares just how good your business is with others, they are more likely to buy from you.


Facebook Introduces Recommendation Engine and New Call-to-Action Buttons for Local Events and Businesses: Facebook introduced “a variety of new features that help you… discover new things in the world around you, decide what to do or where to go and connect with local businesses in easier and faster ways.” Facebook rolled out a new Recommendations feature that makes it easier to gather, map, and organize local business or service recommendations from your friends, and will revamp the Events bookmark to simplify searching for and getting the latest information on local events. The newest version of the Events dashboard will be available in the U.S. “in the coming weeks.”

Facebook Live Introduces Broadcast Scheduling Tool for Verified Pages: Facebook rolled out “the ability for Verified Pages to schedule live broadcasts, starting with live videos published via the Facebook Live API.”

Facebook Launches Workplace for Enterprise Users: Over a year ago, Facebook began testing Facebook at Work, a work-friendly version of its site. The goal was to allow businesses and organizations to create “their own social networks among their employees that are built to look and act like Facebook itself.”

Instagram Adds Instagram Stories to Explore Tab: Instagram announced that users will “begin to see Instagram Stories on Explore.” The Instagram Stories feature was released in August “for sharing everyday moments.”

LinkedIn Updates Skills and Endorsements Features: LinkedIn revamped the Skills and Endorsements features on the site and “now when someone views your profile, they’ll only see the most relevant endorsements for the skills you want to highlight.”

Periscope Introduces Periscope Producer: Periscope rolled out Periscope Producer, “a new way for users to stream live videos to their Periscope accounts from devices other than phones and tablets.”

Pinterest Unveils the Pin Collective: Pinterest introduced the Pin Collective, a new initiative that “connects businesses with Pinterest’s best content creators” and provides an opportunity for brands to partner with these experts “to create content that simultaneously delights Pinners and drives business results.”

Pinterest Introduces More Targeting Options for Ad Campaigns: Pinterest’s enhanced ad targeting options make it “easier for you to get your ideas in front of the right audience at just the right time.

Snapchat Gradually Removes Auto Advance Feature and Introduces Story Playlist: Snapchat announced that “select Snapchatters in [its] Android community and rolling out soon across all Android and iOS, the Auto Advance feature will be removed.”
