Bury St Edmunds street closure plans on hold after concerns

Plans to close motor vehicle through routes in the Cannon Street area of Bury St Edmunds are on hold following concerns.

The Suffolk County Council proposal was one of a number of changes to roads to improve walking and cycling as lockdown is eased.

Following a meeting with The Old Cannon Brewery, Pea Porridge and Curry's Service Centre about the potential difficulties posed to their businesses, the scheme is being paused to assess alternatives.

Cllr David Nettleton, who attended the meeting, said: "It's the sensible thing to do. Lets get it right before we do anything and then it's only temporary for up to 12 months but we can stop it at any time.

"I said (to the council) you can't really go-ahead until you've got the support for it locally.

"We don't want to damage the businesses and the pub has got to get its beer there somehow."

The council will seek the views of residents and businesses and the proposed closure of Cadney Lane will not feature in a future scheme.
