The owners of a popular deli/restaurant in Bury St Edmunds are looking to open an additional site in the town.

Gastrono-me Restaurants Ltd have applied for a drinks licence for an empty property in Abbeygate Street.

Abbey Pharmacy has moved from 22 Abbeygate Street into Guildhall Surgery in nearby Lower Baxter Street and the empty building has a licence application notification posted in its windows.

Michael Simmonite, owner of Gastrono-me in St John’s Street, is asking permission to sell drinks at 22 Abbeygate Street from 8am to midnight every day except Sunday when the hours would be 9am to 10pm.

The premises would be open during those times and the application is for both on and off licence sales.

The application describes the ground floor as measuring 2,227 sq ft and the basement 4,100 sq ft.

The licence would run from August 1.

Speaking to the Bury Free Press, Mr Simmonite confirmed they were looking to open an additional site.

He said they were in the process of submitting a planning application.

Mr Simmonite did not provide further details about the proposals.

He added: “We love Bury St Edmunds and the plans we have in mind we think will fit nicely.”
