Bury St Edmunds MasterChef contestant Hannah Gregory to pursue a career in cooking
A MasterChef contestant from Bury St Edmunds has missed out on a place in the semi-finals – but the ‘rollercoaster’ experience has encouraged her to pursue a career in food.
Hannah Gregory, 33, was knocked out of the competition in Wednesday night’s episode after her lamb three ways dish received a mixed verdict from hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace.
The dish included a sous vide rack, steamed cabbage wrapped cannon and a lamb rump bon bon.
Gregg said: “Your bon bon I think is fantastic. However, the steamed piece of lamb isn’t cooked.”
John said: “You can cook but you’ve given yourself way too much to do.”
Hannah, a creative producer for music festivals, watched the episode with her boyfriend Jon Tonkins over a bottle of Champagne.
She said: “It was pretty tough to watch. I was still pretty proud of what I did even though there were some fundamental errors. It was still a good plate of food.”
Wednesday dealt her a double blow as she was also told she had lost her job but she is determined to pursue a career in cooking through pop ups, supper clubs and private dining.
“It’s just a bit scary with the way the world is at the moment,” she said. “I’m looking at it as a time to practice and cook every day. Once everything is back to normal hopefully this will be the start of an exciting new career.”
Hannah, who has chronic fatigue syndrome, said competing on MasterChef, an experience she has dreamt of for 10 years, was a ‘rollercoaster’ and she was ‘pushing through on adrenaline’.
“Food has been a massive healer for me,” she said. “It’s the one thing that really makes me happy bringing people together.”
Unsure what she wanted to do with her life before joining MasterChef, Hannah had a message for others at a crossroads.
“If you’re sitting on the fence about something, you’ve got to do it. The last few weeks have shown life is precious, you should follow your gut and do what you want to do.”
