An electrical engineer, who built his own computers, was caught in possession of indecent images of children, a court has heard.

Derek Clarke, 45, of Springfield Court, Bury St Edmunds, pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday

He was given a three year community order and will have to participate in the Thames Valley Sex Offenders’ programme and sign the sexual offences register for the next five years.

Sentencing him, Judge John Holt said Clarke’s offending would benefit more from treatment than from punishment.

Lynne Shirley, prosecuting, said the 21 indecent images discovered on Clarke’s computer were graded at the lowest level of seriousness. Forty nine movies, some at the next highest level, were also found.

Miss Shirley said the images, believed to be of children aged between 10 and 14, came to light in April last year. When interviewed by police, Clarke told officers he built his own computers.

In mitigation, Joanne Eley said Clarke was a married father-of-two who now faced losing his job.
