Bury St Edmunds fish and chip restaurant plan refused as it would ‘harm’ listed building

A fish and chip shop owners latest plans to build an extension and open an American diner in Bury St Edmunds, has been refused by counillors.

Abdullah Gokteke put in the plans for the shop in Risbygate Street.

But the building is Grade II listed and papers to St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s development control committee on Thursday (15) said it would ‘harm’ historic parts of the building on the first and second floor.

A council spokeswoman however said the shop still had permission for a ground floor extension, which had been granted in 2011.
