Bury St Edmunds’ first real ice rink attracts about 1,000 people for launch weekend
An estimated 1,000 people got their skates on for the launch of Bury St Edmunds’ first real ice rink over the weekend.
The Snow Queen helped Wil Bryant, vice chairman of town centre improvement organisation OurBuryStEdmunds, launch the new feature, in Charter Square at the arc shopping centre on Saturday.
Professional novice ice skaters Alex, Elliot and Ed Appleby, from the Colchester area, then show-cased their skills in the rink.
OurBuryStEdmunds commissioned Cousins Entertainment to set it up to provide shoppers with some festive fun and attract more people to the town.
Chief executive Mark Cordell said: “It’s building on our growing reputation as a town centre that punches well above its weight - most places that have ice rinks are cities.
“It was great to see so many people particularly children having so much fun and supporting it. The feedback has been fantastic. If it’s popular then it will come back.”
The ice rink will remain until January 3 and sessions can be booked in advance at www.ourburystedmunds.com/icerink as well as in advance or on the day at The Apex.
Mr Cordell added that sessions on Boxing Day as well as the Sunday and Monday after Christmas are proving popular.
