A church in Bury St Edmunds is preparing to welcome its new minister into her first post.

Elaine Colechin recently finished her training at Westminster College, Cambridge, and is to be ordained at the United Reformed Church in Whiting Street, Bury, at 3pm next Saturday (August 22).

She will then be inducted into the ministry of four churches in the URC group, which includes churches in Wickhambrook, Cheveley and Stetchworth.

Margaret Beatty, church secretary, said: “We’re very positive about having a new minister and feel we’ve chosen the right person for us.”

Ms Colchin, who previously worked as a professional engineer, has degrees in clinical engineering and theology as well as a Master of Science in clinical engineering.

The 34-year-old, who will be ministering over older congregations ‘with more wisdom and life experience’ than her, said: “I’m excited but it’s also quite daunting.”

She replaces Rev Samantha White who left in June, last year, to become a member of teaching staff at Westminster College, where she also trained.
