A town centre pub was evacuated on Friday night, and the road outside closed, after a gas leak was discovered.

National Grid said a leak in an outside main at the junction of Risbygate Stret and St Andrew’s Street in Bury St Edmunds lead to gas in the cellar of The Grapes, which was evacuated at about 5pm and stayed closed until 10am on Saturday.

Greene King said the pub was trading normally today.

National Grid said the initial leak was repaired on Friday night but others were found nearby. Repairs should be finished this evening but the road closures will remain until excavations have been reinstated, which is expected to be on Wednesday.
