Bury Burma war veteran John is 100 today
Looking dapper in his regimental blazer, John Thompson had an early party yesterday for his 100th birthday, which is today.
As he and fellow residents at Stradbroke Court, Bury St Edmunds, waited for St Edmundsbury Mayor and Mayoress Patrick and Anna Chung to arrive, John’s wife Margaret explained that they held the party early because a church service is held there on a Friday and the family are planning a gathering on Saturday with relatives from as far as Scotland and Devon.
John, who was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, and Margaret met in 1946 after he had seen war service with the East Lancashire Regiment, first in Madagascar and, from 1942, in Burma as a lieutenant. He went on to become a Barclays Bank manager in Blackpool. They married in 1947 and moved to Bury six years ago.
The couple have four children, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
