COINS, pots and other trinkets dating back to Roman times have been discovered following archaeological digs in Beck Row.

Nearly 100 items were unearthed as part of preparations to build 131 residential homes at the Smoke House site.

Developers Persimmon Homes Anglia arranged for the area to be excavated and held two open days for residents to learn more about their local history.

More than 60 people viewed the artefacts and spoke with a team of archaeologists about the findings.

Among the 97 items uncovered were more than 40 coins, three pots, a ceramic oil lamp, a bronze brooch and a lead pendant as well as other objects believed to date back to Roman times.

Shaun Marjoram, construction director for Persimmon, said: “Everyone who came to our open days really enjoyed it and we were glad to be able to offer them a unique encounter.”

It is expected the items will be given to Mildenhall and District Museum.
