A motorcyclist may have been trying to avoid a pigeon when he swerved into the path of a van and was killed, an inquest heard.

Charles Lake, 38, of Warren Close, Brandon, suffered multiple injuries and was declared dead at the scene of the collision on the B1106 at North Stow on September 23 last year.

After the impact, Mr Lake’s badly damaged Honda motorcycle caught fire, the inquest at Bury St Edmunds was told on Wednesday.

PC Jason Lambourne told the hearing that the freshly killed remains of a pigeon were found at the scene of the crash. No defects that could have contributed to the accident were found with either the motorcycle or van.

Investigators said it was ‘plausible’ Mr Lake changed course from his side of the road because a pigeon had taken off from the roadside verge.

Suffolk Coroner Dr Peter Dean ruled Mr Lake’s death was an accident.
