A GROUP which provides a vital service to many elderly people living in villages around Hopton has had cause to celebrate.
The Hopton Day Centre began 20 years ago and has just enjoyed its 20th anniversary celebrations. It caters for people living in Stanton, Barningham, Coney Weston, Bardwell, Ixworth, Hepworth, Market Weston, and Walsham-le-Willows and Thelnetham as well as Hopton.
Some 30 volunteers help to run the centre and members are referred by social care.
Every Wednesday, people are collected from their homes and taken to the High Street Chapel, in Hopton, where they enjoy a freshly cooked lunch, guest speakers and a game of dominoes or Scrabble.
Joyce Barrett, day centre organiser, said: “It is a good day out for people and gives their carers a break and for some people it may be their only day out in the week.”
Mrs Barrett praised her team of volunteers, some of whom have been with the centre for the last 20 years. “I have a marvellous team here,” she added.
“Twenty years is a wonderful achievement and you meet so many lovely people and I have learned so much from the members,”she said.
