Award-winning Bury St Edmunds ambulance volunteer who was injured in crash returns to work
A Bury St Edmunds ambulance volunteer, who was hurt in a stock car crash, has returned to work after recovering from her injuries.
St John Ambulance worker Bryony Charles, 23, was volunteering at Foxhall Stadium, in Ipswich, in June when she was hit by a stock car after it lost control and went onto the centre green.
She suffered internal injuries and received a get well message from Kylie Minogue as she had been due to volunteer at the pop star’s concert in Newmarket.
Miss Charles, who was brought up in Haughley and now lives in Ipswich, works full time crewing ambulances for St John and volunteers as the charity’s events organiser in Bury. This week she returned to her volunteering duties in a support role - using the radios and providing communications while on events. Miss Charles, who was named Suffolk Under 25 Volunteer of the Year at the High Sheriff Awards, also started an office-based job for St John as a temporary measure.
She said the support received was ‘amazing’. Her mum has set up an online fund-raising page to pay for private physio sessions. It has already received £500 and is online until the end of the week.
