A LONG-STANDING community event celebrated its 30th year in style at a US air base.

The Joan Mann Special Sports Day has been bringing together hundreds of athletes and families from across the region for more than a quarter of a century.

On Saturday, more than 800 volunteers from across bases in Mildenhall, Lakenheath and Feltwell chipped in to put on another day of events including an obstacle course, basketball shoot-out and bowling.

More than 200 athletes competed, including Joanne Blackwell. She said: “I’m having a lot of fun. The best part of my day was meeting my sponsor.”

Medals were presented to all the participants and event sponsor 1st Lt David Arnett, from 48th Contracting Squadron, said the day showed the community spirit in the area.

“This was my second year participating in this event, and I would definitely take part in it again if given the chance,” he said.

The event was started by Joan Mann, a Mildenhall-based MoD employee.
