A community centre chairman says she is angered at the ‘sheer stupidity’ behind vandalism which left dangerous manholes exposed.

Enid Gathercole said the vandals removed two manhole covers at the centre in Fornham All Saints, and dropped them down the sewer.

“I shudder everytime I think of what may have happened if someone was not looking where they were going and fell down these man holes.

“It could have been a child. If somebody fell down them they wouldn’t have stood a chance.

“They would have been killed. It makes me so angry. It is sheer stupidity,” she said.

The vandals broke into a portable cabin at the community centre, used as football changing rooms and threw blue and grey paint in both the home and away dressing rooms. A door was also damaged in the incident.

It happened on Friday (16) afternoon between 2pm and 5pm. Police say the damage is estimated to cost at least £500 if not closer to £1,000 to repair.
