Abbey Gate tunnel work

Have your say

WORK has begun to create a scaffolding tunnel through the crumbling Abbey Gate, in Bury St Edmunds.

The gatehouse, which dates back to 1327, has been closed since Christmas Eve after mortar and masonry began falling off. St Edmundsbury Borough Council says the structure has been damaged by the cold weather.

Now an inner tunnel of scaffolding is being constructed to allow people access to the Abbey Gardens via the gate while English Heritage carries out repair work.

The tunnel will be used next Saturday by 1 Squadron RAF Regiment from RAF Honington which is due to march through it as part of its homecoming parade following a tour in Afghanistan.
