It may still be a concept, but the Volkswagen ID Buzz concept shown at the Detroit motor show could become a reality – if you like it enough.
Retro in style but technically advanced, VW’s four-wheel-drive, eight-seat electric MPV could go on sale in 2022 if there’s sufficient public enthusiasm for it.
The ID Buzz is number two in a series of five EVs lined up by VW. The first was a four-seat ID hatchback shown at the 2016 Paris motor show. The next three are thought to be a crossover/SUV, a saloon and something a bit sporty.
Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess has cited 2020 as the market launch date for “a new generation” of fully connected, all-electric VWs. “By 2025, we want to be selling one million of these vehicles annually,” he said. “We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen.”
Unlike the single-motor rear-wheel-drive ID hatchback, the ID Buzz has an electric motor at either end for four-wheel drive capability, though it could also be offered in RWD single-motor format, using a 268bhp unit.
The two-motor model’s combined power of 369bhp is said to deliver a five-second 0-62mph time, with a limited top speed of 100mph. A floor-mounted 111kWh lithium-ion battery provides a zero-emissions European test cycle range of up to 372 miles, with the potential to receive an 80%/298-mile charge in 30 minutes.
In “noncritical driving conditions” the driver will be able to retract the touch-pad steering wheel and swivel the seat through 180 degrees (one of many different seating layouts) while the vehicle continues along the road in ID Pilot mode. The ID Pilot tech, slated for release in 2025, provides fully autonomous driving by supplementing Cloud-sourced traffic data with information gathered by an array of ultrasonic and radar sensors, cameras and laser scanners.
The long 3300mm wheelbase and short body overhang design give the ID Buzz two luggage compartments front and rear. Check out this video for a glimpse of the ID Buzz in action.
