Know any other 670bhp cars for under $70k?

Euro-spec Mustangs are coming in for a bit of grief from the Euro crash testers at the moment. Unfortunately it’s hard to hear any of that because HERE COMES THE SHELBY MUSTANG SUPER SNAKE.

Sorry about the capitals but shouting is the only way to do justice to this magnificently mad motor car.

On US fuel and Michelin Pilot Super Sports tyres the 670bhp Super Snake is claimed to do away with the 0-60mph dash in 3.5 seconds and cover a standing quarter-mile in 10.9 seconds. These are serious performance numbers by any standards. By $69,995 standards (that’s £55,750 at current exchange rates) it’s bargain performance too.

How does Shelby do it? By the classically simple method of bolting a (big) supercharger to the 420bhp 5.0-litre Coyote V8. Nothing else. And if you want even more power, that’s available: just specify an even bigger supercharger by Whipple or Kenne Bell for upwards of 750bhp.

The Super Snake is not just a straight line specialist either. The full SS package (which you can add to an existing Mustang for $36,795) includes new 20-inch forged wheels, Shelby dampers, spring and anti-roll bars, uprated Wilwood brake calipers and the Shelby body kit. 1.2g cornering forces are being talked about.

You may look twice at the number of Shelby identifiers all over the car. Under the bonnet alone we reckon there are at least seven. There could well be many more. Then you’ve got ‘Shelby’ on the instruments, the carpets, the seats, the steering wheel and presumably a few other places not shown in the pics.

Not sure how many of those Shelby reminders you can delete. You can deselect the back seats and the big body stripe, apparently, but not the side stripes. If you want to add stuff, there’s plenty of racey tackle on offer, including a Shelby ‘extreme cooling package’, short-shifter kit, adjustable suspension, and cabin roll bar for harness mounting.

It’s easy to forgive the badge overload anyway when you see the ones on the front wings. The neatly rendered steel cobra and script plate reminds us exactly why this car is being launched: 2017 is the 50th anniversary of Carroll Shelby’s first Super Snake Mustang.
