The Terry Pratchett-fan partner of a newsagent we met on the way to the Theatre Royal will never forgive him for not knowing it did Guards! Guards! on her birthday.

Stephen Briggs’ adaptation of the Discworld novel brilliantly condenses its plot, humour and anarchic logic.

Theatre Royal Young Company then gave it all the life and fun Pratchett gives his books. Many of the cast showed superb comic timing, especially Sam Rees as the dragon summoning Lupine Wonse.

Asha Ray was so spot on as Lady Sybil Ramkin that you forgot she was probably less than half the age of the formidable miniature dragon breeding dame.

Perhaps David Bolwell was a little lanky to be the muscular Carrot, who Pratchett modelled on Liam Neeson, but that did not seem to matter.

The Royal’s size, and wood work, precludes bringing 20 tons of fire breathing dragon on stage, so it was nicely done with noises off and lights. JH
