Stowmarket’s John Peel Centre will become London’s East End next week as The Matchgirls lights up the venue.
Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society will strike up the all singing, all dancing musical from September 10 to 13. But with an audience capacity of only 100 seats you need to swan along and book tickets soon.
Director Jo Chadwick, said, ”We will be transforming this versatile venue into London’s East End during Victorian times and the staging will bring the actors close to the audience so that they will really feel part of the action.”
The Matchgirls is a heart-warming musical, based on fact, which tells the tale of the women workers who, in 1888, took on the match manufacturers Bryant & May. Their strike for better conditions was the first mass withdrawal of labour by women.
In a show crammed with comedy and pathos, music and dance, these Cockney sparrows sing through adversity in a range of numbers that will put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.
Evening performances are at 7.30pm, with a matinee on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets at £12, (concessions £10), are on sale now from the John Peel Centre, on 01449 774678 or www.wegottickets.com
