it was just five months ago when an unknown singer named Matt Cardle dazzled audiences at the opening of a new Bury St Edmunds venue.
But despite his elevation to international stardom, he still remembers where it all began, returning to LP, in Woolhall Street, last Thursday to say hello.
More than 100 fans queued for pictures and autographs from the 2010 X Factor winner, whose single When We Collide has been in pole position in the charts for three weeks and landed Matt a Christmas number one.
David Stapleton, director at LP, said: “It was pretty surreal but it was nice to see him and see that he is fit and healthy and enjoying life. He didn’t look too run down.”
David said that people soon realised that Matt Cardle was there and word spread fast, leading to a crowded bar and queues of young girls at the gates.
“One lady turned up with her daughters – she had clearly just come from sitting in front of the television at home with her slippers on,” said David.
Matt went for dinner in the town before popping in to the bar to see his old friends. But he stayed to pose for pictures and sign autographs.
His band Darwyn performed at the opening of LP in November 2010.
LP’s David said: “Matt said he would like to come down and play, but we respect he has a busy schedule.”
