Photographer’s unique collection sells for £105,000 at auction

A unique collection of work by a celebrated photographer including shots of The Beatles and Audrey Hepburn was sold for £105,000 at auction in Bury St Edmunds.

Nearly 260 lots in the portfolio by Angus McBean were snapped up at Lacy Scott and Knight on Friday by collectors and dealers from across the country.

Among the prized lots was a visitor book from the society and theatre photographer’s London studio featuring more than 1,000 signatures of his star clientele from the 1940s onwards, which sold for £11,000.

Other highlights included two test shots for The Beatles’ Blue album sleeve, which went for £650.Meanwhile, a lot of four Audrey Hepburn images made £1,500.

McBean’s partner and studio assistant David Ball auctioned the collection.

Ed Crichton, fine art manager at Lacy Scott and Knight, said: “We were thriled. There was only one lot which didn’t sell - a painted book case.”
