Allotment holders in Brandon are not only reaping the rewards of their labour with bumper crops of fruit and vegetables, but they have also celebrated the first anniversary of the plots.
The town's allotments have been such a success that all the 43 plots which were set up by Brandon Town Council at Staunch Meadow are being tended, and there is also a waiting list for people to join.
Christine Mason, Brandon Town Council clerk, said: "It's great to see that the allotments have been such a success, especially when many were cynical about how they would turn out.
"The council has a duty to provide allotments and we are glad we found a suitable site and were able to just get on with the job.
"People of all ages have allotments, and it's great to see young families coming here too."
Mrs Mason who keeps a weather eye on the site and visits regularly praised the town keepers who look after the site and make sure there are water supplies.
An association, run by allotment holder Michael Ambrose, has also been set-up to deal with any concerns and issues at the site.
Allotment holder Pamela Wainwright said: "This is the first time I have had an allotment.
"My husband and I are really enjoying growing fruit and vegetables, which our three children love to eat, and the allotments are in a great location."
Dennis Tweed, who suffered a heart-attack earlier this year, said: "I come down here with my wife and three children- it's really peaceful and has helped me feel better. It is hard work, but it is really satisfying to grow your own produce and it tastes really good too."
Graham Glasscock, said: "There is a great community spirit here and everyone helps each other out and swaps fruit and veg with each other."
