A village playgroup, which was on the brink of closure because of a shortage of cash, is now thriving thanks to community support.
Just 17 months ago, Feltwell Playgroup, which is based at the WI Hall, in The Beck, was set to close, but parents, local businesses and residents have rallied together to raise much-needed funds.
The playgroup, which has been running for 33 years, has gone from strength to strength thanks to a financial boost and was rated 'good' by Ofsted inspectors following an inspection in February this year – the playgroup's best ever rating.
Claire Scarff, playgroup manager and committee chairman, said: "We were on the brink of closure, but everyone has got behind us to help raise money and keep us afloat.
"We ran a year of charity events, with an event every month, including a race night, disco, quiz and family fun day, which has allowed us to continue offering local affordable childcare – something which is very important to many parents.
"We desperately didn't want to close because we offer a lifeline to parents and I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped us.
"The playgroup is going strong and we now have 34 children on the books, where as we only had 18 before."
James Whichelow, of Whichelow Property Management and Lettings, in Brandon, said: "It is important to have and support local playgroups.
"The closure of Feltwell playgroup would certainly have inconvenienced parents in the village, which is why it's great to see it going strong, and we are pleased we were able to offer it a donation."
Feltwell Playgroup runs sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-11.30am and 12.30-3pm for £4.50. There is a lunch club available from 11.30am-12.30pm for £2.50, or £11.50 for the whole day including lunch.
