Volunteers for the Pickerel Project have been meeting to make parts of the river in Stowmarket more attractive.

In an update to Stowmarket Town Council last Wednesday, project member Mike Smith told councillors the first phase, which has focused on the stretch between the Pickerel Bridge and Stow Bridge, was expected to be completed in the summer.

As well as improvements to the river itself, the scheme included new footpaths on one bank and a new seating area, he said, adding: "Hopefully we will see a great success story along that stretch in the next six months."

The project now plans to focus on the area where the River Gipping joins the Rattlesden River, and upstream to Boulter's Bridge.

A public consultation on what should be done with the area is due to take place later in the year, while members of the project have begun talks with landowners to see whether new footpaths could be put in.
