A leak of highly flammable chemicals from a tanker could have had 'horrendous' results when it pulled into a service station in Stowmarket.
Tot Hill Service Station was closed for more than three hours as fire crews fought to stop the chemicals spreading on Thursday.

Angela Faggetter, manager, said cashier Mel Fryatt noticed the leak coming from the back of the tanker as it pulled into the service station and called emergency services.

Mrs Faggetter said: "He was actually driving along the road with all this stuff pouring out. It could have been horrendous here because we are a garage.

"All we would have needed was for somebody to put their mobile phone on.

"I store a lot of petrol, so it would have been dangerous."

Fire crews from Elmswell and Stowmarket were called out at around 8.45pm, along with the Highways Agency, which coned off the area. Foam jets and sand were used to absorb the leak. A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said the sliproad to the service station was re-opened just after midnight.
