Friends of a Stowmarket stalwart, who died earlier this year, have been commemorating his life with a sponsored bowls drive.
Dennis Firman, 76, who lived on Poplar Hill, died in January after suffering a heart attack.

The popular man had been involved in many aspects of community life over the years, including his passion for bowls.

Mr Firman had been a founding member of the Mid Suffolk Indoor Bowls Club, as well as acting as club secretary for 20 years and club president.

He also organised many bowls tours, both nationally and internationally.

On Saturday, friends and family gathered at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre for the club's last match of the season, raising £460 for Mr Firman's favourite charity – the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Peter Hawkins, club president and match secretary, said: "Dennis died so suddenly and this event was organised as a mark of respect for him. He held every office going in the club, apart from treasurer. I think Dennis would have absolutely loved it. He was a club man and always put his club first and if he could be at an event he would be. He was a great man and will be greatly missed."

The event was sponsored by a friend of Mr Firman's, Andrew Bingham, who donated the Dennis Firman Charity Cup for the winning team and the runners up trophies.

Mr Firman's widow Carla, said: "I was very pleased with the whole idea and it was a huge success. I knew all the club members would turn out in force for Dennis, he would have been very proud."
