STOWMARKET Rugby Club are celebrating their 50th year anniversary, which neatly coincides with the club’s recent onfield success, writes Nathan Beales.
The club achieved promotion as Eastern Counties Division One champions last season and also reached the final of the prestigious Suffolk Cup.
Their first fixture of their new season in London Three North-East is away to Wymondham tomorrow (3pm).
Stowmarket were formed in December 1961. In contrast to their current facilities, the club had played at some unfashionable home grounds such as the sloping pitch at Finborough Hall.
But in 1988, the club owned its own ground and clubhouse at Chilton Fields Sports ground. The clubhouse was upgraded two years ago.
With the improved facilities, Stowmarket geared towards onfield success. The side currently has 11 teams with 200 youngsters involved.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the club are holding events throughout the 2011/12 season and are appealing for current and former players to contact the club and get involved.
n Meanwhile, Mildenhall Eagles, Thetford and Thurston all face difficult away trips when Eastern Counties League Division Two kicks off on September 24.
All three teams will be hoping to win their first game of the season after successful pre-seasons.
Mildenhall travel to Norwich Union on the opening day of the season, with the Eagles starting their second consecutive season in the division.
Meanwhile, Mistley host Thetford in a match the vistors will be hoping to claim all the points.
Recently-relegated Thurston travel to newly-promoted Sawston in what should be an interesting game.
