Tigers gamble on injured Heeps for National League Fours

CAMERON Heeps will have to break through the pain barrier to take his place in the National League Fours at Stoke on Sunday, writes Derek Bish.

The 16-year-old Australian race ace missed the Mildenhall Fen Tigers’ victory at the Rye House Raiders on Monday with a tendon injury in his arm, but is set to ride in the Premier League for parent club Ipswich Witches today.

If he comes through that unscathed, he will be declared fit for the Fours competition on Sunday and take his place in the team alongside Dan Halsey, Lewis Blackbird and in-form Stefan Nielsen.

“If he doesn’t come through the meeting on Friday 100 per cent then he won’t be riding,” said Mildenhall co-promoter and Ipswich boss Chris Louis. “It’s an ongoing problem, but the physio told him it’s pain and he won’t do any more damage, so just put up with it.

“It’s just a case of how much it hinders his riding.”

Should Heeps not make it then fellow teenager Nathan Stoneman will take the Aussie’s place in the team after an impressive start to life in speedway.

Skipper Blackbird appeared to be returning to form following his shoulder injury with 14+1 at Rye House on Monday, but Dan Halsey could only manage 4+1.

He began the year in fine fettle, but is suffering a crisis of confidence at the minute, something Louis is keen for him to push through.

“Most of speedway is confidence and you need to keep going to get back on form again,” said the co-promoter. “We need to give him more rides and hopefully he will respond, hence we picked him for the Fours.”

Meanwhile, Brandon-based Nielsen returned his first career maximum at Rye House on Monday to show he is beginning to fulfil his great potential.

Louis said: “He’s a good lad to work with and he seems to be making rapid progress this year.

“He didn’t start the season so well, but he is making changes to the way he rides and is getting his just rewards.”
