CAMERON Heeps was the find of the National League season in 2011, and the Mildenhall Fen Tigers look to have pulled another coup off this year.

Reserve rider Nathan Stoneman has produced a string of fine displays at the tender age of 15 – scoring double figures on his last two outings for the West Row-based outfit.

He even outshone Heeps – now the Tigers’ main man – on Tuesday as Mildenhall failed to clinch the National Shield at the Dudley Heathens, suffering their first defeat of the season in the process.

Stoneman said: “It’s gone a lot better than I thought it would to start with.

“After I won the British Youth Championship, I was frustrated I didn’t get picked up by a team and I kept saying that if I got the chance I would go out there and prove I should have been picked ages ago – I feel like I’m doing that at the moment.”

The reigning British youth champion – and current co-leader of this year’s series, with Tigers team-mate Josh Bates – is also targeting silverware for himself and his team this year.

“I’m still going to go for the youth title this year, but I also want to win something with my new team,” he added. “We’ve got a good team spirit here and if anyone needs anything they only have to ask for it.”

Meanwhile, the Tigers are currently in the midst of an injury crisis, with Joe Jacobs the latest to be ruled out.

The in-form number two netted a paid maximum against Rye House on Sunday, but suffered two hairline fractures to his left wrist after tumbling in the opening heat of Mildenhall’s failed bid to win the National Shield at the Dudley Heathens.

He will be out for around a month and joins Josh Bates on the sidelines after the teenage reserve aggravated a shoulder injury in a crash on Sunday, while skipper Lewis Blackbird is still working his way back to full fitness following his own shoulder problem.

The Tigers have swooped to sign Rye House’s Joe Graver on a 90-day contract to replace Bates ahead of hosting the Stoke Potters on Sunday (4.45pm) and visiting Rye House on Monday (4pm).

Mildenhall may use rider replacement to cover for Jacobs rather than replace him with a guest.
