Crucial speedway double-header at West Row on Sunday
MILDENHALL Fen Tigers co-promoter Michael Lee has told his side they must be on their game as the National League season enters ‘crunch time’.
The West Row-based outfit take on the Isle of Wight Islanders three times in less than 72 hours, two of those to decide whether or not the Tigers will be in the National League play-off final for the second year in a row.
Mildenhall Stadium hosts a double-header on Sunday (3.30pm) – the second meeting being the sides’ rearranged National Trophy clash – before the Suffolk outfit cross the Solent on Tuesday in pursuit of more glory this campaign.
“Our boys are good, but it’s crunch time now,” said Lee. “One thing that is so important for us is not to throw silly points away.
“We really can’t afford to do that because six silly points thrown away could make all the difference.”
Mildenhall have already won the National League’s pairs and fours competitions, while Stefan Nielsen clinched the British Under-19 championship earlier this month.
And with the league title, the Knockout Cup and tomorrow’s Riders’ Championship still up for grabs, the Tigers could have a glittering trophy cabinet come the end of the year.
However, with Isle of Wight reserve Adam Ellis and several other Islanders in tremendous form, Lee is not expecting an easy ride.
“We are desperate to get through to the final,” he said. “We won’t underestimate them because they have a strong team and have played some trump cards at the right stage of the season, including Adam Ellis who scored 20 points for them at King’s Lynn last week.”
For Sunday’s double-header, supporters can witness both meetings for the price of one.
