Baseby shock at Tigers axe

MILDENHALL Fen Tigers cup winner Aaron Baseby admitted to feeling shocked and confused at the West Row outfit’s decision to axe him from their 2012 line-up.

The 21-year-old former Bournemouth Buccaneer – who ended the season in a reserve berth – looked set to be handed one of the five slots in the main team for this year after a number of solid displays in 2011.

However, with Mildenhall opting to sign National League winner Stefan Nielsen from the now-defunct Scunthorpe Saints, it became clear Baseby was no longer needed.

“It was a bit of a shock,” said the brother of Mark Baseby, another Mildenhall cup winner who will not be re-signing for the team. “I enjoyed all my racing for Mildenhall, but I’m not in the promoters’ plans for this year and that’s the way it works out sometimes.

“Last year was probably the first year in two or three I enjoyed and I feel I only had one really bad meeting.

“I always gave 110 per cent for the team, but the management have to do a job and it’s not up to me to tell them who they should sign.”

Although no official confirmation was made, Mildenhall’s promoters appeared to be keen to keep Baseby, although he ended the season out of the main team as one of Mildenhall’s two reserves.

He was praised for his consistency from number seven, his best score being the 14+3 points he bagged in last June’s Knockout Cup clash with the Hackney Hawks at Mildenhall Stadium, the Tigers’ first step on their road to glory in the competition.

“You never really get told you are definitely in for next season,” added the Ipswich Witches-owned racer. “From my point of view, I thought I had done enough, but there was no direct communication saying I was definitely in. It comes as a disappointment to me.”

Baseby now faces the prospect of waiting for an injury in someone’s line-up this season if he is to earn a ride in 2012 and has not ruled out a return to West Row, saying there were ‘no hard feelings’ towards the club, despite his exit.
