Running: Fabulous turnout in Pacers' second race and a string of positive results

SAINT Edmund Pacers had another fantastic turnout – with a string of good results – at the second race in the Friday Five Series, held at Kirton.

Just as at the first event in Ipswich, the Pacers were to the fore in both the men's and ladies' races. Their three leading men were inside the top 11, and the first three ladies were also in the top 10.

This time, Tom Kingsnorth led the way. A winner of the Alton Water 10K last month, Tom finished third behind comfortable winner Chris Sellens, of Colchester Harriers, and outstanding 15-year-old Jack Garvin, of Ipswich Harriers.

Tom covered the five miles, from the recreation ground in Kirton, in 26mins 55secs, 15 seconds behind Sellens and a mere two seconds behind Garvin.

Steve Robinson, winner of the recent Brandon Forest Half-Marathon, was a close fourth in 27.00, just five seconds behind Kingsnorth, while Andy Taylor was the third member of the scoring team in 28.17.

James Heath beat 30 minutes by finishing 27th in 29.43. He was followed by Tim Fox (30.27), Simon Phillips (30.46), Jon Lockwood (31.27), David Vaughan (32.28) and Steve Bailey (32.44).

Then came a procession of Pacers ladies, led by Julie Heath, who was first in the over-40 category in 33.12. Maureen McCarthy clocked 33.45 to finish second in the over-45 section, behind overall runner-up Tracey Curl, while Wendy Jones also featured highly in 34.15. Pat Partridge again dominated her over-55 age group in 34.56.

Among them, Pacers men continued to finish at regular intervals.

Paul White (33.25), Ian Gooderham (34.00), Steve Le Poidevin (a big personal best of 34.10) and Robert Tillyard (37.20) were all in the top half of a bumper field of more than 400.

Other Pacers results: Sarah Golding 38.32, Chris Cook 38.34, Hayley Brewis 38.52, Paul Theobald 39.40, Linda Hones 39.56, Martyn Brophy 40.07, Amanda Martin 40.40, Helen Snazell 40.43, Sharon Harrison 41.38 and Rebecca Gooderham 41.38 (second female junior).

The third race in the Friday Five Series is the Stowmarket Striders Five, taking place at Haughley Park this evening (7.45pm main race). There will also be a supporting junior fun run at 7.15pm.

The results of the junior race at Kirton are unavailable, although again, there were top-10 finishes for the Pacers' trio of Sam Harrison, Adam Seymour and Matthew Le Poidevin.
