Running: Take a break – a good time for training

THERE has been a quiet period in the running diary for most, as there has not been the weekly local races to keep us busy.

This break gives runners an opportunity to try some slightly different events. Alternatively, it is a good time for training such as cycling, gym circuits or swimming which can help to strengthen muscles often neglected.

Increasing core muscle strength is particularly good and often overlooked as this will help protect your back while exercising.

Brandon Fern Hoppers have sent in three results from the Thorney 5-miler which by all accounts was a lovely race as far as weather conditions were concerned although as seems to be the norm of late, a little windy.

Ian Cooper performed well and recorded a time of 32.42mins while team-mates Trevor Rolf and Paul Meader finished in times of 43.32mins and 47.30mins respectively.

On Sunday, at the Mildenhall's Riverside Middle School, Newmarket Triathlon Club host the Newmarket Duathlon.

There will be plenty of bike accessories to tempt you as well as the race and cycle rally to watch.

Don't forget. If you need some motivation to keep up with your training, join St Edmund Pacers at the Bury Leisure Centre all-weather track on Monday and Wednesday (6.30pm-7.30pm). Please note, there is no training on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Bert Tarpley 10 takes place on Sunday, September 28.

The race starts from Beyton Middle School and entries are accepted on the day.

Julia Jepson, will compete with her son Ross, as the pair look to retain the Family Trophy – one adult, one child.
